# Export responses

> Download every response as a CSV file.

Open **Submissions** and choose **Download CSV**. Each response is a row and each question is a column, so the file opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or most data tools.

For a large form the export can take a while. If it does, SurveyOwl says the export is being prepared and emails you a download link when it's ready.

## Before you share the file

An export can hold names, contact details and links to uploaded files. Store it somewhere safe and only pass it to people who need it.

## Keeping columns stable

Column headings come from your question text. If you rename a question, later exports use the new name, so tell anyone whose spreadsheet or script relies on the old one before you publish the change.
