# Question settings

> What you can change on a question, from required answers to limits and routing.

Click the grip beside a block to open its menu. Which options appear depends on the question type.

## On most questions

* **Required** stops people from moving on without answering.
* **Add a description** puts a line of help text under the question.
* **Default answer** pre-fills the answer. People can still change it.
* **Hide** takes a block out of the form without deleting it. Choose **Show** from the same menu to bring it back.
* **Turn into** switches a block to another compatible type. **Duplicate** and **Delete** do what they say.

## Choice questions

You can add, remove and reorder options, or use **Bulk insert options** to paste a list. Multiple choice, dropdown, multi select and checkboxes can include an **Other** option with a free-text box. **Badge** labels options with letters or numbers, or turns badges off.

Multiple Choice has a **Multiple selection** switch that lets people pick more than one option. Multi Select and Checkboxes also have **Min choices**, **Max choices** and **Randomize options**. Randomizing keeps **Other** last.

## Text and numbers

Short and long text answers can have **Min characters** and **Max characters**. Number questions can have **Min number** and **Max number**.

## Ratings and scales

**Rating** lets you pick the number of stars: 3, 5, 7 or 10. **Linear Scale** has a start, an end and a step, plus optional labels for the left, center and right.

  **A default answer counts as a real answer.** It's submitted unless the respondent changes it, so don't use it as example text.
